Technology. Some people love it, some people fear it, and for a lot of us older adults, it can feel like it’s just moving way too fast. But here’s the thing—technology isn’t just for the young. In fact, I’d argue that it’s one of the most valuable tools we have as older adults to stay connected, engaged, and even create new opportunities for ourselves.
I’m Ronald Murphy, and at 77, I’ve had a long career in technology management, consulting, and small business. I’ve seen firsthand how tech has transformed the way we live, work, and communicate. But it wasn’t until recently that I realized just how much purpose I could find in helping other older adults navigate and embrace technology.
Today, I want to talk about why tech is essential for older adults, why I’ve made teaching technology my purpose, and how you can use it to enrich your life—whether you want to earn online, stay connected, or simply learn something new.
Why Technology Matters More Than Ever for Older Adults
Technology isn’t going anywhere. It’s only becoming more integrated into every part of our lives. But instead of feeling overwhelmed by it, we should be seeing it for what it is: a tool for empowerment.
Here are just a few ways technology is improving our lives as older adults:
✅ Staying Connected: Video calls with family, social media, and messaging apps bridge the distance and help us maintain relationships. ✅ Lifelong Learning: YouTube, online courses, and audiobooks allow us to keep learning and stay mentally sharp. ✅ Earning Opportunities: Remote work, freelancing, content creation—technology has opened doors for older adults to make money from home. ✅ Health & Well-being: Telemedicine, fitness apps, and wearables help us track and improve our health.
For many of us, technology isn’t just about convenience—it’s about independence. It keeps us engaged, informed, and empowered in ways we never had access to before.
Why I’ve Made Tech Teaching My Purpose at 77
After a long career in tech and business consulting, I transitioned into freelance digital marketing and copywriting. But then, life took an unexpected turn. My wife was diagnosed with cancer, and I stepped away from work to be her caregiver for four years. That experience changed me profoundly.
When I re-entered the digital world, I saw things differently. I wasn’t just looking for income—I was looking for purpose. And I realized that throughout my career, I had always loved one thing most: helping others understand and use technology in ways that improved their lives.
I saw how many older adults felt left behind or intimidated by tech. I knew that if someone with my background still had to learn and adapt, then many others were struggling even more. So, I decided to lean into what I know best—simplifying tech for people who need it most.
Now, I create content that helps older adults confidently use technology—whether it’s for earning, connecting, or just making life easier. And let me tell you, it’s been one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done.
How You Can Start Embracing Technology Today
If you’re feeling behind or unsure where to start, let me reassure you: it’s never too late to learn. The key is to start small and focus on what benefits you the most. Here are a few practical steps:
📌 Pick one skill to improve. Whether it’s using Zoom, setting up a digital store, or learning about online security, just pick one thing and focus on that. 📌 Use free resources. There are tons of YouTube videos, tutorials, and free courses designed specifically for beginners. 📌 Practice regularly. Technology becomes easier the more you use it. Set aside a little time each day to explore and learn. 📌 Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Join communities, watch explainer videos (like the ones I create!), and don’t hesitate to reach out with questions.
And most importantly—have fun with it! Technology can open up so many possibilities, and you’ll be amazed at what you can do once you start.
